Vitiligo is called the skin disorder that is the most common skin disease among the people of the world that happens due to the pigment loss in the skin. The disease affects around one percent to two percent of the world population. When the destruction of the melanocytes takes place, the skin gets the white spots. Where the vitiligo happens on the body? This disease mostly takes place on body folds such as groin and armpits and the exposed areas of the skin. It also may develop at body openings.

The disease can start at any age. Half of the affected patients develop the disease at the age of twenty. It might also be linked to other autoimmune conditions like thyroid disease and diabetes.

The Appearance of Vitiligo

The diagnosis of vitiligo revolves around the clinical examination. Vitiligo lesions might be localized and even generalized. Within the affected area of vitiligo, even the white hair can emerge and the scalp gets whitened at early stage and the body parts such as eyelashes, eyebrows and beard hair can also go white.

The Spreading of Vitiligo

Yes, the disease can spread on all over the body. Vitiligo may remain localized and stable for an indefinite period of time and even it might develop gradually or quickly. There is still no way out for the prediction of the disease. Even the emotional distress, sever sunburn and pregnancy can be the cause of vitiligo spread.

The Disease’s Emotional Impact

Among the dark-skinned people, Vitiligo may appear more than the fair-skinned colored people. The disease has much emotional and psychological impacts on the patients. Patients who have this disease find themselves depressed all the time. They loss the confidence due to the disease and they get more complex due to the fact they are isolated in job market.

May Children Develop the Disease?

Yes, they can due to the family history of vitiligo. If parents of anyone in the family have the disease, the vitiligo may develop in the kids. It is an inherited disease.

Is There Any Treatment of Vitiligo?

Since there have no treatment generated for the disease and the studies are going on to find one, nonetheless the disease can be treated though these treatments have no long lasting results. Vitiligo can be treated through camouflage, surgical treatments, laser treatment, depigmentation and psychological counseling. There are many natural treatments too are available in the market.

Now the question emerges in mind – whether they need the special precautions for the protection of their skin?

It is often seen that many of the vitiligo patches do not contain natural protection against the rays of the sun. This happens because the skin of vitiligo affected turns white and due to the absence of active melanocytes (these are the cells that produce the melanin in the skin). The sun, as is seen, usually becomes effective in increasing the production of melanin that actually gets the skin tanned. This is called a protective mechanism for the prevention of the skin from getting ruined by the sun’s burning.

Skin’s protection is quite necessary from sunburn because it appears quit painful. If you go with vitiligo more outside under the sun exposing your skin, this will certainly produce the wrinkles on the skin and produce other damages.

Since vitiligo affected skin gets damaged under the sun, there are certain sunblocks available in the market which protect the skin from damages and wrinkles. But do use them after consulting your dermatologist.

Many patients start relying on the sunblocks for the protection from the sunburn but it is not wise to rely heavily on them. It is highly recommended to wear a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and the clothes which are useful in protecting you from the sun and keeping yourself under the shade in particular during the daytime i.e. 11a.m. to 3 p.m.

Do put the sunblock after you swim or take exercise.

Melanin is the pigment that has the ability to determine the color of your skin, hair and eyes. In the condition, when the melanin producing cells begin dying, the skin slowly starts showing the white spots on it.

Initially the disease leaves the skin with small patches, which later turn into bigger and even spread over other parts of the body as well.

This change that occurs in human appearance leads to the patients to confidence loss, worries and tension.

There is no treatment so far for vitiligo but the treatment that is available is for stopping or slowing the progression of depigmentation. The medical science has been researching to find some treatment for this skin disorder.

These kids with the age group of 4-16 years were suffering from all kinds of Vitiligo (generalized, 58%; segmental, 37%; acrofacial, 5%) and the most focused thing is that out of them 43% had received steroids and phototherapy previously but with insufficient response. The notable point is that all of these patients had received Tacrolimus ointment minimum for 3 months and the physicians evaluated their response. For head and neck, the response rates appeared good than the trunk and extremities (89% vs. 63%). The response of eyelids was much better nearly 100 percent success and additionally the rate of response too varied with season. In summer season, the response rate got 100% and in winter, it got 61%. The response varied in spring and autumn ranging between 76% and 81%.

Although the research seemed utterly demonstrating and unblended, nonetheless it depicts that the tacrolimus looks convincing and helpful in kids with Vitiligo. It should be noted that the protection of tacrolimus is already revealed in other researches.

In addition to that, both are laced with their own potentials for the successful repigmentation. A research, which made its appearance in Journal Watch Dermatology June 1st 2007) has related the upshots of the two in a randowmized twofold blind trial. The upshots have shown that the enhancement appeared faster, wider and cosmetically more satisfactory with slender band UVB than with PUVA.

The area that showed enhancement in the PUVA group happened to be twenty percent and this was fifty percent in UVB. It was also seen that the color of the re-pigmented skin matched brilliantly with the native skin color in UVB group than the ones treated in PUVA group. The researchers brought it to close that Narrow band UVB appears to be a safe and effectual way of treatment in Vitiligo patients.

The research showed the important findings of genetics of Vitiligo. The team of this study did the investigations on the people affected by Vitiligo and even their relatives having Vitiligo or other auto-immune diseases got investigated as well. The team figured out that Vitiligo was colossally linked with many other auto-immune diseases in particular of the thyroid but including pernicious anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, Addison’s disease and adult-onset auto immune diabetes.

Finding out a gene NALP1, the team plotted the genome of these people. The investigating team showed that NALP1 inclined the people to Vitiligo and other auto-immune illnesses particularly the auto-immune thyroid disorders. This seems much worthy to jot down that twenty percent of the people affected by Vitiligo also suffer auto-immune thyroid disorders and this gene is engrossed in creating both of them.

According to the investigators, this gene too works out a partial control over our inborn immune system. This inborn system appears to be the primary defense tool of our body against infection. The persons who are hereditarily inclined to the aforesaid auto-immune disorders are the ones who could get triggering sign from the infection. If this association gets vividly comprehended, it might clear a number of missing associations about causation of Vitiligo and immune disorders.

Way back in April 2007, this research had been published.

In spite of the impressive enhancements in the administration of this disease, still there exist a number of people who do not respond to any availability. This all take them to the situation of despair and the people begin to knock at every place that offers them even the least hope for the treatment of this sickness.

The ever-growing interest in PABA (Para Amino Benzoic Acid) recently lands into the same category. A number of people are raving big about this remedy. The medical literature in this manner has been sought that is laced with huge information about PABA in various disciplines of medicine but not much evidence about its usage in Vitiligo has been discovered.

A research published in 1942 (ref: Sieve BF. The clinical effects of a new B complex factor, para-aminobenzoic acid, on pigmentation and fertility. South Med Surg. 1942;104:135–139.) raised the claim of success in the treatment of male infinitely and Vitiligo with the oral usage of PABA. This research did not have any controlled groups and therefore did not have any scientific importance.

The safety issues surround PABA as well ranging from hyper sensitivity to its current usage to wider liver injury and skin depigmentation. The evaluation is not satisfactory about the safety in kids, pregnant or nursing women and the people having liver and kidney problems.

A burly tall and enduring tree, Ginko Biloba grows only in a tiny area in China and does not have any botanical relatives. On its medicinal use, a large part of the study has been dolled up in the field of Neuro-Psychiatric disorders such as the loss of memory and Alzheimer’s illness, but the researches have been indecisive till date. The recent research published in 2008 has termed it to be ineffective to prevent dementia/Alzheimer’s illness. It has also been discovered that the development in memory is short lived. Advocacy has been given to Ginko for the enhancement in blood flow and as a defensive agent against oxidative damage to the body tissues.

The dermatologists from Chandigarh India (Clin Exp Dermatol, 2003) have performed a double blind research in order to invent its potential for the management of Vitiligo. The team provided Ginko Extract 40mg three times a day to fifty two patients in a double blind placebo-controlled trial. The team discovered that the development of Vitiligo got stopped in 80% subjects from the Ginko arm in comparison with 36% in the placebo arm that is around double. Massive to conclude re-pigmentation got documented in 40 against 9% from Ginko vs. placebo groups.

This research is being considered with curiosity and hope.

But it has lately been depicted that the melanocytes’ behavior could be adjusted by treating keratinocytes that do not include any pigment of their own. The research was done on bio engineered skin implants in which the tone and color of the skin are made to look like the natural tone and color of the potential recipients.

It is thought that such bioengineered skin implants would take to the innovatory changes in the cosmetic result of conditions that need skin implanting, like acute burns, epidemis bullosa, scleroderma, venous leg ulcers and diabetes.Raymond Biosy, the top researcher, is of the view that this technique could improve the quality of life in pigmentary illnesses such as Vitiligo and melasma.

The best outcome in this study says that the conduct of melanocytes could be maneuvered through keratinocytes agency. It will affect the medical administration of pigmentary disorders as well as the growth of a new generation of cosmetics in the days to come.

The scientists from both the universities – Tokyo Medical University and University of Cincinnati did this research.
