During the last few decades sun protection has become part of our daily lives because of the harmful effects of sun’s UV rays. Ozone layer protects the earth from harmful UV radiations. Due to ozone depletion we do not have much protection against UV radiations.

Sunlight has both short term and long term side effects so sun protection is necessary for individuals of all ages. In some cases a single overexposure to sunlight can lead to severe sunburned skin which may have serious consequences later in life.

The harms caused by UV rays include skin cancer, wrinkles, freckles, age spots, dilated blood vessels, and premature aging. These UV radiations could also trigger vitiligo and in some cases it could initiate further progression.

Sunscreens (chemicals that have capacity to absorb UV rays) when used in combination with other sun protection steps can help in protecting the skin optimally. Sun protection is particularly more important for people who have vitiligo or fair skin.

You can use the following techniques to minimize the dangers of UV radiations:

• Use Sunglasses: When buying sunglasses check its label for standards set forth by the Center for Devices and Radiological Health in the FDA. Buy brown shaded glasses which are uniformly tinted and fit you perfectly.

• Use Umbrellas: When buying an umbrella buy the one with denser fabric. An umbrella with a denser weave has a higher Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF).

• Use Hats & Sun Protective Clothing: Another effective method is to use sun protective clothing as it is easier to use and reliable. Always use a hat with a three inch brim, full sleeves shirts and full pants.

• Use Sunscreens: Use sunscreen on exposed areas of your body. Use a sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or higher and apply it fifteen minutes before going outside so that it may bind the skin. Reapply it every two hours.
